April Employee Spotlight: Sheila Chimel

My name is Sheila Chimel, and I’m an Accounting Supervisor at Kepro located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Interestingly, I typically prefer not to be in the spotlight and am much more comfortable behind the scenes. However, I was graciously nominated by one of my co-workers for this feature, so here I am, and this is my story. Prior to leaving the workforce to care for my children, I worked for a large health insurance company.

After 12 years of being a stay-at-home mom, I decided it was time to get back to work, and I knew I wanted to return to the health care industry. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, going to the beach, and decorating my home.

Fortunately for me, my responsibilities are so varied that no one day is the same as the next.

There are a lot of moving parts in the Accounting Department starting at the beginning of the month going through what we call the month-end close process, in order to prepare the financial statements for the prior month. We are committed to and focused on the ongoing coding and processing of accounts payable invoices, invoicing clients, as well as receiving and applying cash collected through accounts receivable.

Keeping up with all the various contracts can be challenging at times, but it is rewarding knowing that we work for a company that is helping improve health outcomes and provide medical assistance to our most vulnerable
populations.

As far as my responsibilities, they include supervising a team of five accountants and a senior accounting assistant, participating in or leading various system implementations; working closely with HR to process benefit invoices; and ensuring our tasks for the month-end close are completed accurately and on time. Also, I have been the accountant in
charge of the Tricare contract for the last ten years.

I enjoy solving problems, looking for ways to improve accuracy, workflows, and efficiency, and helping people become successful in their roles. We have an incredible team that works well together and has a strong work ethic. With the company’s growth over the years, it has opened opportunities for me as well, and I continue to learn something new every day!

While our work in the Accounting Department does not directly impact our clients or beneficiaries, we are an essential piece of the total picture. Currently, we are wrapping up a remarkably successful annual corporate audit, which means our financial statements are being accurately stated and that we are following the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in our daily practices.

I am proud to be a part of ensuring that our company remains both fiscally responsible and stable so we can continue to retain our current contracts and have the ability to seek out new business and growth. Our internal policies and procedures guide us in this direction and indirectly impact Kepro’s capacity to expand the number of lives we touch.
